Stop making boring Kokedamas—turn them into living pieces of art!
In this video, I show you how to create a unique, self-hydrating kokedama using a Nephrolepis Pom Pom fern. Unlike traditional kokedamas where the moss dries out over time, this method keeps the moss lush, green, and thriving with almost no mess.

I start by lining a bowl with mesh fabric and filling it with my kokedama soil mix. After placing the fern inside, I pack more soil around it and insert two pieces of spider-wood for a natural, scaped feel. Once shaped, the mesh is gathered and tied with corespun poly thread to form the kokedama ball.

To make it self-hydrating, I wrap the ball with moisture-wicking terra tape, then cover it with vibrant sheet moss, secured neatly with thread. I also poke a few openings around the base of the fern and plant small Fittonia cuttings to add texture and contrast. Additional thin spider-wood details complete the design.

Finally, the finished kokedama sits in a shallow tray filled with water, with river stones added to enhance the overall aesthetic.

This is kokedama—elevated. 🌿✨

🌿 What Is a Kokedama?

A kokedama is a Japanese style of growing plants where the roots are wrapped in a ball of soil and moss instead of being placed in a pot. The moss ball is tied together with string and can be displayed sitting on a tray, a wooden slab, or hung like a living ornament. It’s often called the “poor man’s bonsai” because it offers a beautiful, artistic plant display without the cost of traditional bonsai pottery.

🏯 A Brief History

Kokedama originated in Japan, evolving from an older bonsai-related technique called nearai, where plants were grown with minimal soil and exposed roots. It became popular during the Edo period (1600s–1800s) as a simpler, accessible form of plant display. Kokedama reflects the Japanese principles of wabi-sabi (beauty in simplicity) and nature in small forms.
Today, kokedama has become a global trend in indoor gardening, plant styling, and minimalistic décor — often blended with modern design and DIY techniques.
